Exercise and its Health Benefits
(Last Updated On: December 6, 2016)

Want active health? Want to have a healthy body and a healthy mind? Physical exercise is the answer. Exercise basically consists of any bodily activity that promotes mental and physical well being of a person. One doesn’t need much preparation before undergoing any exercise; they can start with baby steps. A brisk walk or a run is good to start with. Exercise not just help one stay fit but is also refreshing and relaxing. People of all types, shapes, sizes and abilities can benefit from indulging in any kind of exercise. Everyone knows the benefits of exercise but only a few follow it religiously. Most of us find it difficult to fit amidst busy schedules. However, everyone should understand and acknowledge the benefits of exercise and therefore try to follow at least some type of exercise on a day to day basis. The main key is to find the right exercise according to one’s body type, availability of time and space. Besides, you need to consume healthy food to complement your exercise regime.

Types of exercise

Physical exercises are generally grouped into three types

  • Flexibility exercises: Includes stretching exercises that improves the range of motion of muscles and joints
  • Aerobic exercises : Includes exercises like  cycling,  swimming,  walking,  skipping, running, hiking etc. focused on increasing cardiovascular endurance
  • Anaerobic exercises : Includes exercises like weight training, functional training and high-intensity interval training that increases short-term muscle strength.

Benefits of Exercises

1. Controls weight

It prevents weight gain & weight loss both. It helps you maintain adequate body weight. You burn calories depending on the intensity of the activity. Sweating it out also burns the extra fat from the body.

2. Combats health conditions and diseases

Doing some kind of physical exercise boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good,” cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides which decrease your risk of cardiovascular diseases (heart attacks/Hypertension). It also prevents or manages a wide range of health problems and concerns, including stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, and certain types of cancer, arthritis and falls.

3. Improves mood

Exercising for about 30-minute stimulates various brain chemicals leaving you feel happy and more relaxed. Gives you an emotional lift or lets you out your steam after a stressful day. You may also feel better about your appearance and yourself when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem.

4. Improves Sleep

Research has proved that a good 30 minutes workout cures sleep disorders such as insomnia.

5. Boosts energy

Improves muscle strength and boosts endurance. Exercise or some kind of physical activity delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently.  Once your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you have more energy to go about your daily chores. It also increases your chances of living longer.

You need not set aside large chunks of time for exercise you can simply start by getting more active throughout the day in simple ways — by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or by revving up your household chores, taking your pet for a walk and more.  To live healthy, first think healthy.

We at Portea encourage everyone to follow a healthy lifestyle. Stay Healthy, Stay Happy!
